Lee Daniels Moves From PRECIOUS To A Full Slate Of Films

Lee Daniels is a busy man after last years two Oscar nominations for Precious.   He has just signed with CAA and is already hard at work on his next film for Sony Pictures.

Daniels is currently rewriting a script for The Butlera film about Eugene Allen, an African American servant who worked for 34 years in the White House.  Denzel Washington is attached to star as Allen who had a unique perspective on the civil rights struggle and was invited back after retirement to witness the inauguration of the first African American president, Barack Obama.  The first draft of the script was written by Recount‘s Danny StrongLaura Ziskin is producing for Sony.
Selma an independently financed film has Daniels attached to direct with distribution from The Weinstein Company.  The film produced by Plan B is based on the life of Martin Luther King Jr. A deal has also been closed for Daniels to direct a remake of the 1957 film Nights of Cabiria.  Daniels is also said to be considering adapting the Kander and Ebb musical The Scottboro Boys, which just ended its Broadway run.
I was not familiar with Lee Daniels before the emotionally charged Precious. Daniels got his start as a casting director on Purple RainHe has also produced such films as Monster’s Ball and The Woodsman. The Butler sounds like great film, I am a huge fan of Denzel Washington so that should be good.
