THE MUSEUM OF THE WEIRD Being Made Into A Movie For Disney

Disney is aggressively developing films based on their theme park attractions. The newest film, The Museum of the Weird, is based on a Disney theme park attraction that was never brought to life.

It began with Pirates of the Caribbean, now Guillermo del Toro is developing Haunted Mansion movie, there’s a film based on TomorrowlandThe Enchanted Tiki Room has a film being developed that is loosely based on it in the works, and another one based on the whole theme park experience called Magic Kingdom, which is being directed by Jon Favreau.
The Museum of the Weird was an idea that Walt Disney was interested in perusing back in the 1960’s, but it never got off the ground. 50 years later the idea has started on the road to being brought back to life.
According to the LA Times, “A half-century ago,  well-known Disney theme-park creators Rolly Crump and Claude Coats designed the Museum of the Weird with the idea of spotlighting a parade of ghostly organists, magic carts, talking chairs and other surreal exhibits. Walt Disney wanted to use the museum as an adjunct to the Haunted Mansion, complete with its own restaurant. But the museum was never built, though some of the more ambitious pieces were incorporated into the mansion itself.”
The studio is currently in discussions with screenwriter Ahmet Zappa to take on the scripting duties on the movie. The project is still in the very early development stages, but Zappa’s idea is “for the museum to be refashioned as a film.” It will be very interesting to see what Zappa and the studio are planning for this one, and will Disney eventually build The Museum of the Weird theme park attraction?
What do you all think about this film idea?
