WONDER WOMAN TV Series Postponed For Now

David E. Kelley‘s TV reboot of Wonder Woman from Warner Bros. TV has been postponed.
Deadline is reporting that the series has been shelved because it did not land a deal at a broadcast network because of what has been noted as “unfortunate timing”.

Kelley, creator of the hit show, The Practice has been interested in developing this contemporary take on Wonder Woman for some time. In September he had a meeting with te DC team who also had expressed interest in launching a new Wonder Woman TV franchise. Kelley immediately began working on aspec  script for the pilot.
On Wednesday night the script was shopped to the broadcast networks. Fox and ABC passed and the CW simply could not afford the show. The only reason they went to Fox with the project is out of courtesy, it had never really been considered a fit for the network. It is said that ABC’s decision to pass was more politically motivated.
Wonder Woman is a strong empowered woman, which seemed like a good fit for ABC, but supposedly a potential DC-Marvel clash got in the way. Disney (which owns ABC) acquired Marvel last year for $4 billion, and ABC and Marvel have been busy developing Marvel properties, including a Hulk series withGuillermo del Toro and David Eick and an adaptation of a Marvel female superhero, Jessica Jones, with Twilight writer Melissa Rosenberg. This decision by ABC to pass on the series left NBC and CBS. Deadline reports that the executive team at CBS was split on the decision. NBC is currently undergoing a shift in management, new programming chief Bob Greenblatt is yet to take the reins, making it  impossible to get the type of license fee that the studio was seeking in order to do the show Kelley had envisioned.
As you can see the situation is truly a result of poor timing. If there were not so many other superhero TV shows going on this show might have been picked up. Wonder Woman is expected to be shopped around in the future and let’s hope it gets picked up!
