Shawn Levy hired to direct FANTASTIC VOYAGE
Director Shawn Levy has been hired to helm the James Cameron produced 3D film remake of Fantastic Voyage by 20th Century Fox.
Levy directed all of the Night at the Museum movies, Date Night, and the upcoming film Real Steel with Hugh Jackman. He is a very safe director for a studio to choose, he is not a loose cannon and will do what the studio asks of him. I am sure he’ll do a fine job bringing Fantastic Voyage to life under the close direction of James Cameron.
The original Cold-War era film revolved around a team of scientists who are shrunk to atomic size and sent on a miniature submarine to save the life of a defecting Soviet scientist. The story then followed the biological adventures the team encounters in trying to save the scientist and themselves. The new film will follow the original story, except the Cold War element will not be there.
The script will be written by Laeta Kalogridis who also wrote Shutter Island for Martin Scorsese. He is hard at work on other projects currently, he’s writing Ghost in the Shell for Avi Arad and DreamWorks and rewriting Nine Lives for Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney.
At one point, Darren Aronofsky, Timur Bekmambetov, Jonathan Mostow and Louis Leterrier had met with Cameron to possibly take on the directing duties for this movie, but Levy is the guy that’s going to take it on.
