SOUND OF MY VOICE Blu-ray Review

Sound of My Voice is one of the most unsettling films I have seen of late. Directed by Zal Batmanglij this unique sci-fi thriller stars Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius, and Brit Marling. After creating a lot of buzz at this years Sundance Film Festival, the movie has arrived on Blu-Ray and DVD from Fox Home Entertainment. If you are curious if indie film making is still alive, Sound of My Voice is a prime example of what is possible for a small amount of money.

The story follows a documentary filmmaker (Denham) and his girlfriend (Vicius) as they infiltrate an  enigmatic cult in the attempt to uncover the truth and expose the cult as a sham. The cult is lead by Maggie (Marling), who tells her followers she’s from Earth’s future. From the beginning to the end, you will be unsure of the validity of the cult and continually be guessing.
What sets Sound of My Voice apart from the other recent cult films (Martha Marcy May Marlene and Red State) is the fact that it is more accessible. The characters are seemingly normal, but are in a very abnormal situation. The film forces audiences to question not only what they believe, but how far they are willing to go for a cause. There are a number of moments during the film that are laughable, and you automatically think this has all got to be bullshit. Then there are other times that you feel like you are one of the flock, and have been drawn into the cult as a member.
The ending is very ambiguous and leaves you guessing with no true conclusion or answers. Even though this is very annoying to me, I think that it’s truly the only way a film like this could go. I think if all questions were to get answered in every movie, then the soul would be sucked out of many films. This film has nothing bu soul, and you can feel it in the cast.
The small cast is what makes this movie special. Many will say that Brit Marling is the main reason that this film is good. While she is solid in the movie, I think that Denham was fantastic in this movie. The relationship between Denham and Vicius is very believable, which adds to why she follows along with her boyfriend on this ruse.
The disc does not have too many amazing special features, but it does look and sound good on Blu-ray. The muted colors and the gritty focus looks like you are watching a moving Instagram picture. The sound is good because of the 5.1 surround.
