THE LEAGUE’s Kevin & Jenny’s Guide to a Happy Marriage

What’s the recipe for a happy marriage? If only it were so simple as following a proven formula. While it’s not that easy — human nature is quite the variable — there are some lessons every couple can take away from the best couple on television. If you’re not watching “The League” yet, stop everything else you’re doing and start watching the seasons or the funny video clips online. Cold fusion can wait, but your funny bone needs tickling and “The League” will do just that. This half hour comedy about a group of friends involved in a fantasy football league is often absurd and always hilarious. Stephen Rannazzisi and Kate Aselton shine as the only couple in the league: Jenny and Kevin MacArthur.

Have a Life

Now into season four, Jenny and Kevin are parents twice-over but their characters have far more to explore than just the wilds of parenthood and co-habitation. Where most comedies exploit mundane activities like taking out the trash or changing diapers, on “The League” we can go episodes without seeing the MacArthur progeny. Jenny and Kevin retain their identities as individuals after marriage and parenthood. By indulging themselves from time to time they are better able to care for their family.

Common Interests

One of the ways Jenny and Kevin keep their relationship strong is through their common interest in fantasy football. During seasons one and two of the show, Jenny wasn’t officially part of the league, but instead helped Kevin run his team. Jenny’s exclusion from the league actually caused tension in the relationship that was resolved when she was invited to take over an open slot in the league. Sharing an interest gives Jenny and Kevin things to discuss and enjoy outside of their daily life together. It also gives them a common enemy (or, in some cases, enemies) against which they can unite.

Teamwork

Whether it’s tackling childcare issues or league business, Kevin and Jenny work together against outside forces. A great recent example: Jenny’s trip to visit Andre (a fellow league member and plastic surgeon) at work. Knowing full well that Andre can’t keep a secret, Jenny visits the office on a “super secret” mission to have an embarrassing tattoo removed from her hip. Once Andre inevitably spills the beans, Jenny and Kevin are able to negotiate a trade in their favor. Adding insult to injury? The tattoo was fake.

Accepting Each Other Completely

Sure, Jenny might have Kevin trained to subconsciously respond to commands often reserved for dogs, but so do the rest of his friends. The beauty of Jenny and Kevin’s relationship is how thoroughly they understand and accept each other. Despite his perpetually disapproving mother, Kevin stands by his wife and takes care of her as she indulges in a few instances of drinking after nine months of sobriety. Jenny doesn’t begrudge Kevin the opportunity to go to Dallas Cowboys training camp because she can’t travel at the end of her pregnancy.
