David Yates Directing Harry Potter Spinoff FANTASTIC BEASTS
David Yates is coming back to the world of Harry Potter. THR reports that Yates will direct Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Yates has a great relationship with J.K. Rowling, having directed four of the original films. He is still in talks with Warner Bros, but a deal is likely to be made soon.
Rowling is penning the screenplay for the film which takes place in New York. Fantastic Beasts is set “70 years before the events of the Potter series, and centers on a fictitious author named Newton Artemis Fido Scamander. In Potter lore, Scamander compiled a reference guide to magical beasts, and the movies will follow his adventures after he is commissioned to write the tome.”
Warner Bros. announced that they had purchased the rights to Fantastic Beasts in September of 2013. The studio is developing the property across video game, consumer product and digital platforms.
Yates is currently directing Tarzan, with Alexander Skarsgard and Margot Robbie. I think he did a great job with the Harry Potter films he directed and am interested to see how Tarzan turns out.
