COCAINE BEAR – Movie Review

Cocaine Bear is a wild ride of a movie that tells the bizarre and true story of a black bear in Georgia that stumbled upon a stash of cocaine and consumed it, going on a drug fueled rampage. The film, directed by Elizabeth Banks, is a mix of dark comedy and crime thriller, with a healthy dose of absurdity thrown in.

The plot follows the journey of the cocaine, from its origins in Colombia to the hands of a drug smuggler who crashes his plane in the woods of Georgia, leaving the drugs to be discovered by the bear. The bear’s ingestion of the cocaine sets off a chain of events that involves a cast of eccentric characters, including a park ranger, a corrupt sheriff, and a pair of bumbling drug dealers.

Despite its seemingly ridiculous premise, Cocaine Bear manages to be a well-crafted and entertaining film. The acting is solid, with standout performances from the likes of Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Ray Liotta. Banks also does an excellent job of balancing the film’s various tones, seamlessly shifting from moments of humor to suspense and back again.

Perhaps the film’s greatest strength, however, is its ability to weave in commentary on the drug trade and its impact on society. While the story of the bear is undeniably amusing, it serves as a stark reminder of the often devastating consequences of drug addiction and the lengths people will go to feed their habits.

Cocaine Bear is a fun and engaging film that manages to be both entertaining and thought-provoking. Its combination of dark comedy and crime thriller tropes makes for an entertaining watch, and its underlying message about the dangers of drug addiction gives it a deeper level of meaning. If you’re looking for a movie that’s both entertaining and thought-provoking, Cocaine Bear is definitely worth a watch.

You can watch Cocaine Bear only on Peacock.
