TRANCE Blu-ray Review

I missed Trance in theaters, so I was happy to check it out on Blu-ray. Directed by Danny Boyle, the film stars James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson. The psychological thriller gives a lot to digest, but is well-worth the time because of it’s unique story.

Trance takes place in London, and tells the story of Simon (McAvoy) an auctioneer who gets mixed up with a gang of thieves when his fine art auction house is robbed in the middle of an auction. He double-crosses the gang, but is viciously beaten and knocked unconscious by the gang’s leader, Franck (Cassel). When Simon wakes up, he claims to be suffering from amnesia and does not remember where the painting is stashed. He convinces Franck to hire a female hypnotist Elizabeth (Dawson) to find the answer. Fantasy and reality soon blend together as Elizabeth delves ever deeper into Simon’s subconscious, consuming all as a series of shocking events spiral violently out of control.

Boyle has been interested in directing this film for many years. Joe Ahearne penned the script that was turned into a British TV movie in 2001. He started production on this while he was working on directing the opening ceremonies of the London Olympics.

Paying attention is key while watching Trance. The film has so many twists and turns that it is easy to veer off track. The narrative feels overly fractured and is hard to follow. You really have to be in the mood for a film like Trance. I found myself getting distracted during the middle of the film, but the climactic final act drew me back in. The only problem is that there are elements that you miss during the middle, which forced me to re-watch it.
The key reason that the film is worth watching is because of the performances. Cassel, McAvoy and Dawson are all superb, and give solid performances. McAvoy is great in these types of unique roles because he is such a versatile actor. Dawson is much more than just sexy, she always turns in a powerful performance in her roles. My first experience with Cassel was when I saw Brotherhood of the Wolf. He is perfect for this type of role, fitting in effortlessly as a white-collar criminal.
The Blu-ray has some above-average audio and video. Trance was shot digitally and looks fantastic in 1080o, The cinematography makes the film look wonderful on Blu-ray. Colors are so crisp and clear which is good because a good portion of the film takes place at night or with low lighting. The audio encompasses you because it has a 7.1 surround track instead of the usual 5.1.
