Movie Review: Jurassic World Rebirth

Directed by Gareth Edwards and written by Jurassic Park original screenwriter David Koepp, Rebirth marks the seventh installment in the franchise and a reboot of sorts. Set three years after Jurassic World Dominion, the film introduces new characters—Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali), and Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey)—who embark on a mission to retrieve DNA from the largest creatures on Earth for a potential heart disease treatment. Their journey leads them to a deserted island research facility full of dangers and ancient secrets.

Favorite Elements

  • Nostalgic yet fresh: Critics praised the film for recapturing the original Jurassic Park magic with suspense, sleek visuals, and subtle nods to adventure classics. It’s seen by some as the best entry in years.
  • Streamlined plot: A review at Cinemablend described the film’s video game–like simplicity—and balanced storytelling—as a welcome break from the convoluted earlier sequels.
  • Soundtrack highlights: Composer Alexandre Desplat channels John Williams’ iconic themes with stunning orchestration, especially in key set pieces like the river chase and final showdown.

Problems With the Film

  • Mixed critical consensus: On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a middling 51% critic score and 71% audience score—plenty of viewers found it predictable, calling it “fossilized clichés.”
  • Too safe for some: Some critics say the film leans too heavily on nostalgia, lacking an original identity.
  • Divided viewer opinions: On IMDb and message boards, opinions vary—some dismiss it as CGI-heavy and underwhelming, while others appreciate its entertainment value.

Jurassic World Rebirth doesn’t revolutionize the franchise—but it might be the reboot it needed. With its polished visual style, lean storytelling, and fresh cast, it strikes a satisfying middle ground between nostalgia and innovation. Fans craving thrills and dinosaurs won’t be disappointed, even if it doesn’t break new ground.
