THE RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN COLLECTION Blu-ray Review
The Rodgers & Hammerstein Collection Blu-ray is a must-own set for music geeks. It features six classic musicals from Rodgers & Hammerstein, including The Sound of Music, The King and I, South Pacific, Carousel. Oklahoma! and State Fair.
The set features brand new 4K digital restorations of The King and I and Carousel, the only two films made in CinemaScope55. Oklahoma! looks and sounds beautiful thanks to the restoration from 4K from 8K scans of 65mm Todd-AO film elements of its original roadshow version at the unusual original frame rate of 30 frames per second. One of the coolest bonus features of the set is a Sing-A-Long version of The King and I, which is perfect for die-hard music geeks. In addition, there is over an hour of behind-the-scenes features for Oklahoma!.
South Pacific and The Sound of Music are the only films that have previously been released on Blu-ray. The remaining films arrive on Blu-ray for the first time.
My personal favorite from this collection is The Sound of Music. I am not a hardcore musical geek, but grew up in a family that celebrate musicals, an Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musicals in particular. Sound of Music is the perfect blend of musical set during WWII. This is a plus for me as a fan of just about any WWII movie. I am also a big fan of Yul Brenner (The Magnificent Seven), so I obviously enjoy The King and I.
Movie musicals today can thank Rodgers & Hammerstein for paving the way for them. Each of these films transports audiences to a different time and place. A place things are whimsical and carefree. This was just what people needed with the end of WWII and the troops coming home. These films were the perfect way f0r audiences to escape from their daily lives.
The Rodgers & Hammerstein Collection Blu-ray is a must-own for fans for a few reasons. The Sing-A Long version of The King and I, and the the addition of the Cinemascope. The picture and sound quality are unmatched, making these films look as good as they did (if not better) whey the were initially released in theaters.
20th Century Fox continues to kill it with every Blu-ray release they do. They are the best at taking classic films and restoring them for Blu-ray. Fox will release Oklahoma! and The King and I in stand-alone Blu-ray and DVD combo packs October 7 in commemoration of their 60th anniversaries in 2015 and 2016 respectively.
