Peter Mayhew returning as Chewbacca in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII
It looks like we won’t have a CGI Chewbacca in Star Wars: Episode VII. THR reports that Peter Mayhew will reprise the role for the highly anticipated new installment from director J.J. Abrams.
Mayhew has played the role of the iconic wookie since 1977. He was scheduled to attend Comicpalooza in Texas, but had to drop out “due to filming.”
Episode VII has already begun shooting and most of the cast in set according to Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn. He revealed the news in a recent interview. An official press release is sure to come soon listing other cast members. Mayhew joins a number of other familiar faces like Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford who are set to reprise their roles. Adam Driver is set to play the lead villain in the film.
I am glad that Peter Mayhew is reprising his role. Since he is getting up in age many of the heavy action sequences will likely be filmed with stunt doubles, but that is better than CGI in my opinion.
Episode VII is going to be released in theaters on December 18th, 2015. Stay tuned for me news as it becomes available.
