Batman: A Look Back at The Dark Knight Trilogy

Batman is most definitely one of top superheroes in terms of popularity. Due to this we have seen numerous movies and the Batman comic most recently got an all new and shiny screen life when The Dark Knight was released in the year 2008.

Christopher Nolan produced, directed, and co-wrote the film. Nolan was inspired to direct this film after he read the 1940s Joker’s comic book debut, The Killing Joke graphic novel that was released in 1988, and the Long Halloween series, which was released in the year 1996.

But, there’s more than just the Dark Knight! Read on to find out more about the trilogy of the Batman series.

The Trilogy

Batman Begins-Released in 2005

Joss Whedon, an American script writer was rejected a number of times while pitching the original Batman story. He then pitched the story to Warner Bros. and employed David S.Goyer and Christopher Nolan to script the Batman Begins.

They aimed to keep it real and practical with a touch of humanity. The film was shot in Chicago and the UK. This movie included a lot of traditional stunts too.

In this film, Christian Bale was cast as Batman and Liam Neeson as Ra’s al Ghul. Apart from that, Katie Holmes played Bale’s love interest and Cillian Murphy as the Scarecrow. Bale made a simply remarkable body transformation from his previous role in The Machinist where he lost an incredible amount of weight only to bulk up amazingly fast to fit into his role of Batman, not many physical transformations of this scale in such a brief time have been matched by any actor in recent years.

The coolest factor of this film was a brand new Batmobile and mobile Batsuit. They were created especially for the film.

The film was released on 15 June 2005 Canada and the United Stated. It instantly became a box office hit and raked in $48 million in the opening weekend.

In fact, the total worldwide collection is more than $372 million. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography and listed on Empire’s, 500 Greatest Movies of All Time, Batman Begins was the first of the three movies released.

The Dark Knight-Released in 2012

After the huge success of Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan resumed his position of the director and joined hands with his brother, Jonathan to co-write the script of The Dark Knight, the second movie in the trilogy.

The film had the best of the talents with Christian Bale starring as Bruce Wayne once again. Heath Ledger played the Joker, while Morgan Freeman portrayed the role of Lucius Fox. Gary Oldman played James Gordon and Michael Caine was cast as Alfred Pennyworth.

Apart from them, Eric Roberts, Chin Han, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart were also casted in important roles. The initial filming began in April 2007 in Chicago and was completed by 22 January 2008.

The story line flows as Joker and his associates rob a bank, which was owned by mobs in Gotham City. The associates kill each other one by one, which was planned by the Joker, who intends to escape with all the money alone.

Lt. Jim Gordon and Batman collaborate with Harvey Dent, to eliminate the mob. The bosses of the mob Sal Maroni, The Chechen, and Gambol hold a video conference, along with the Lau, who knows the hidden funds and hides in Hong Kong.

The Joker interrupts the meeting and says he will kill Batman for half of their money. The bosses do not agree for this and Gambol tries to put a bounty on him. Eventually, the Joker kills Gambol and takes control of everything.

Meanwhile, Batman gets a hold of Lau and brings him back to Gotham to testify against them. The Joker announces to people that unless Batman reveals his identity, he will kill every day and goes on to kill Commissioner Gillian.

Batman then probes Joker and finds out that Rachel and Dent were in separate buildings with explosives. The Joker reveals their location and Batman finds out later that he has been tricked thereby killed Rachel and scarring Dent’s face.

The Joker then bombs the police station and escapes with Lau. Batman fights off with the Joker’s men and the SWAT team rescues hostages.

But, the Joker claims that he has won and Gotham city will be shattered once Dent’s rampage becomes public. Batman convinces Gordon to action his murder so Dent will always be a symbol of hope. Gordon then burns the bat signal.

The Dark Knight Rises-Released in 2012

Nolan wanted to make the third and final series an emotionally invested one. Although, Nolan finished the script by 2008, he revisited it by February 2010 and started filming by May 2011.

The film was completed by November and was not in 3D, but the image quality was impeccable. In this movie, Tom Hardy starred as Bane and Anne Hathaway was casted as Selina Kyle.

Although his image was tarnished in the previous series and after self-exiling himself, Batman returns to Gotham city. He tries to protect and assist the police force from Bane, who plans to destroy the city. The movie grossed over $1.08 billion making it the 11th highest grossing film of all time.

Without its predecessor and successor, The Dark Knight would have seemed incomplete. All three movies have been brilliantly shot and hence, have garnered a major fan following. The Batman hype has even penetrated the online gaming world as many slot games have been inspired from these movies!
